Caroline Bingley
Caroline is characterized by her outward beauty and eloquence and her inward jealousy. She appears to be nice when talking to someone, but the moment they turn their back, she trash-talks them. She does this especially with Elizabeth. One reason is that she sees her as a rival for Darcy's affections. She would never have a chance with him, because she employs the very tricks to catch his eye that he so despises. She represents the exact opposite of what Darcy wants, a fact that constantly frustrates her as she tries to win him over. Caroline, like her aunt (Lady Catherine), dislikes those who are less well to do then her. This is shown when she dissuades her brother of his affections for Jane. Caroline serves primarily to contrast with Elizabeth in Darcy's eye.
