Mr. Collins
Mr. Collins primarily serves to add humor to the novel. The book introduces him as the heir to the Bennet estate, a fact which causes Mrs. Bennet much grief. He always speaks in a silly manner, using over-formality and colloquial phrases. He serves as a source of amusement for both Elizabeth and her father. The most extreme case of his silly speech is during his proposal to Elizabeth. He claims extreme love and says the marriage would be profitable, contradicting himself numerous times. His confessions of love are moot as he proposes to Charlotte only two days later. Mr. Collins is silly and values nothing more than prosperity, especially when it comes to marriage and to Lady Catherine.
